A VISIT TO FONZI'S BAKABANA CABANA
The only people who have been around longer than Tonya are Urbaca's co-founders, Joe and Fenn. Tonya and Alfons have been together since 2007.
 Alfons is a Maroon from the jungles of Suriname, which is located in South America. Tonya and Alfons visited Suriname in 2008.
In July 2011, they opened Fonzi's Bakabana Cabana at 3239 SE Hawthorne. They classify their genre as "Authentic South American & Caribbean Cuisine".
The cart has been sucessful for several reasons. Alfons is a great cook and cooked for international visitors on tour in Suriname. Tonya works a full day at Urbaca then hustles over to Hawthorne to help Alfonse close the cart. And the location is prime, not too busy, but enough going on for good people watching.
The the most popular dishes are Fonzi's Jungle Bowl with Chicken (a favorite of Sherry and Chris) and Jungle Spaghetti. They have vegetarian and gluten-free options and never use a microwave or canned food.
If you're ever hungry on Hawthorne, Fonzi's Bakabana Cabana is open year round (currently they have a warmed tent for on-site dining), Tuesday through Saturday, from 12 pm - 7 pm (winter hours) and 12 pm - 9 pm (summer hours).
